Taekwondo Kick

An Introduction to the Martial Arts. Try out the Taekwondo Workshop!

Have you ever considered taking up a martial art?  You can get a brief introduction to Taekwondo at this year's Heart 2 Soul Fest.  This workshop will start at 3 pm on the south end of the field  (adjacent to Finch Ave & behind the high performance basketball court).  The main difference between Taekwondo and Boxing, aside from the fact that they emerged from two different parts of the world, is that boxing only uses punches whereas Taekwondo is a very kick-heavy martial art. When you look at the difference between the West and the Eastern cultures, everything is different although the world is getting smaller as we move more into the future.  There seems to be a mixing of the two cultures as we move forward as we see Eastern martial arts schools in the West and Western combat systems being taught in the East.  Boxing, a sport that exclusively uses punches, is one of the most ancient forms of fighting and physical fitness known to man.  In contrast, Taekwondo is a fairly new discipline and is based on the fact that a kicking foot can travel at speeds faster than an arm can.  Therefore, the majority of the techniques are comprised of kicks even though there are some striking, and traditionally, even a small amount of grappling.

Boxing and Taekwondo Workshops will give you more insight to the differences of both disciplines. Let's take a look at some of the health benefits of taekwondo.
